April Wellness Topics to Be Mindful Of
Here at Medallion Financial Group, we recognize that there are many different dimensions of our personal health. Many people think about wellness in terms of physical health only, but one’s overall wellness also includes mental, emotional, spiritual, financial, and social health, just to name a few aspects. As you plan for retirement and leaving a legacy, we encourage you to consider all of the aspects of a healthy retirement and estate planning, not just the financial side of things.
April is a month when life is springing up from a once frozen ground and we become more aware of the things happening around us. Apparently, it is also a time to pay attention and become aware of many specific pieces of our health. April is an Awareness month for a variety of important topics such as:
Alcohol Awareness
Meant to raise awareness about the consequences of excessive drinking, and to encourage those with a drinking problem to get help. There are campaigns throughout April to draw attention to the causes of alcoholism and the risks of alcohol dependence and encourages people to talk about this disease. You can find more resources by visiting: nacoa.org
Autism Awareness
Autism is a complex mental condition and developmental disability, characterized by difficulties in the way a person communicates and interacts with other people. Autism can bepresent from birth or form during early childhood (typically within the first three years). Autism is a lifelong developmental disability with no single known cause. Check out Autism Society for more information.
Medicaid Awareness
A crucial lifeline for 79 million Americans with limited income and resources, and many older Americans rely on the program for coverage of nursing home and personal care services. Need more information? Head over to Alliance for Retired Americans to learn more.
Oral Cancer Awareness
About 40,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with oral cancer every year. The outlook doesn’t have to be bleak, as you can see either your medical doctor or dentist for an oral cancer screening; many may provide screening services for free. For more information visit oralcancerfoundation.org.
Parkinson’s Awareness
Raising awareness about the disease, its symptoms and the Parkinson’s Foundation, all while encouraging others to take action that impacts the future of Parkinson’s disease. It is estimated that there are currently close to one million American citizens who are living with Parkinson’s disease and more than ten million worldwide. More than 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s every year, and that number is trending upward. Parkinson’s is a nervous system disorder that can have devastating complications. For more information visit Parkinson.org.
Stress Awareness
While this is a natural response to life experiences, that affects almost everyone: There is good stress that can motivate you to complete tasks, and then there’s bad stress, which has the complete opposite effect. At high levels, stress can have a negative impact on your physical and mental health. So, it is important to learn to ease and manage your stress symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Visit The American Institute of Stress for more information.
There are many places that offer help. If you or anyone you know needs help with any of these topics, just do an online search and several will pop up. I suggest you look into a few of them to find the right fit. “What Health” offers a calendar for each month and contact information for each awareness program.
Lastly, we want to invite you all to become more aware of your personal finances: to encourage you to learn how to use the tool called ‘money’ to live your best life now and in the future.
